Legacy
Trust Fund details - 2012
An independent Legacy Trust Fund, jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the
Department for Culture Media and Sport and Arts Council England will have £40
million to support cultural and sporting engagement across all nations and
regions of the UK, throughout the run-up to the opening ceremony of the 2012
Olympic Games and Paralympics Games. Around 70 per cent of this total will go
to cultural provision, with the rest being invested in grass roots sport. In
addition, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has stated that she believes that
this figure will rise dramatically with commercial sponsorship.
Speaking in Liverpool, next year's European Capital of Culture, Ms Jowell
said:
A Legacy Trust - £40 million to support cultural and sporting engagement
across the UK in the run-up to, and during, the 2012 Games will leave a
lasting legacy across the whole of the UK. The majority of the money in the
fund around 70 per cent will be spent on cultural projects. There will be
one major arts project, running for five years, and a handful of large grant
programmes each year.
But this will be no top-down affair. We will make sure the core is strong, but
the cultural magic occurs elsewhere in cultural organisations, and in
the imagination and creativity of individual artists. I also want to see how
we might give support for Cultural Festivals in the cities of Britain in the
four years leading up to the 2012 Games, giving the possibility of the
cultural sector further realising ambitions to do things that would not
otherwise be possible.
Further details of the projects comprising the Olympiad, being organised by
LOCOG, will be announced next month.

Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards
|
FUNDS: Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards
The Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Awards, sponsored and organised by the
Commonwealth Foundation, aim to increase mutual understanding between people
from different Commonwealth cultures through artistic exchange.
Every two years, around ten awards of up to 8,000 are made to craftspeople and
artists from Commonwealth countries who show promise and initiative in their
own country but who have had little opportunity of working in another country.
The Awards are intended to help winning artists explore their art in another
Commonwealth country by working alongside other artists or within an arts
institution.
Through the Awards awareness and appreciation of different cultures is
increased and artists and craftspeople acquire artistic, personal and
organisational skills, while sharing their own skills and talents. Further
information, guidelines and application forms can be found at

FUNDING: Young people and communities

Sciart Wellcome Trust, London, UK | FUNDS: Art and science projects
Sciart, Wellcome Trust, London, UK
Collaboration between art and science is a buoyant field of activity. Visual art, music, digital media, moving image, creative writing and performance provide fresh ways of interacting with scientific research, and engaging a wide range of audiences in scientific issues. In turn, science - with its vivid history, complex contemporary advances - offers a rich supply of inspiration for the arts.
Projects should aim to stimulate fresh thinking and debate in both disciplines. Innovation and experimentation are crucial. At the same time projects should be accessible to diverse audiences and should attempt to engage the public in the social, ethical and cultural issues that surround contemporary biomedical science.
Sciart
is offering to further support and encourage innovative arts projects investigating biomedical science and its social contexts.
