BURNS THE GOLDEN JUBILEE FLAME

People of different ages and all ages came together on Monday 3rd June to take part in the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations.  The festivities began with a procession of around 300 people through the centre of the market town, accompanied by music from the Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band.

The procession ended in the Jubilee Playing Field with a rendition of the National Anthem.  The renovation of the playing area has been a year-long project overseen by the Parish Council, funded by donations from local people, with input from younger members of the community as to its design.  The area was declared officially open by Peter Ridsdale, Chairman of Leeds United FC.

Jubilee Playing Field - Officially opened by Peter Ridsdale

Father John Turner, Ian Taylor (MC) and Peter Ridsdale had the difficult task of choosing three winners from over thirty fantastic costumes entered into the children's fancy dress competition.  Bill and Ben, alias Tara and Katie Bryson, were the worthy winners of the preshool

category, and brother and sister Calum and Tallulah Little won the 5-8 year old and 8 years + categories, respectively.  Calum's imaginative costume reflected the confusing English weather, dressed half in rainy day wear and half in summery clothing, earning him a rightful first prize.  His older sister, Tallulah, was dressed head-to-toe in flowers, representing 'Cumbria In Bloom'.

A number of local skateboard enthusiasts were performing gravity defying moves on the new skateboard facility within the park, and mums and dads took part in sack races as well as the perennial egg and spoon race.

Kirkby Lonsdale Jubilee Beacon

Later in the afternoon the Kirkby Lonsdale beacon was set alight, one of over 2,000 beacons lit across the United Kingdom to honour the Queen's Jubilee.  The final beacon was lit by the Queen herself outside Buckingham Palace, as part of London's celebrations.

The Jubilee weekend once again showed a real sense of community spirit in Kirkby Lonsdale, as the many shops and pubs adopted a patriotic theme.

  CHRISTMAS AT KIRKBY LONSDALE

Christmas at Kirkby Lonsdale.  This year Father Christmas has promised to visit our town on Saturday December 2nd along with the Victorian Princess, the Christmas Fairy and the Friendly Elf.  He will ride through the streets waving his magic wand and low and behold the fairy lights on hundreds of Christmas trees will light up the town until Christmas is well and truly over.

Last year along with all the old favourites we introduced some new entertainment, and THIS YEAR?... well you will just have to come along and find out what is going to happen won't you?

Helping to make the day go with a swing will be the Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band, The Handbell Ringers and the John-O-Gaunt Morris Men.

The shops will be filled with lots of present ideas, food to please even the most discerning will be available in our many eating establishments.

Father Christmas and his parade will leave Fairbank at approximately 2.30pm arriving in the Market Square around 3.15pm when the grotto will be opened for all those special Christmas wishes.
